A New Classic Fusion of Heritage and Innovation –

Renovated Humaid’s Men’s Majles Hall

Overview

This renovation project revitalizes Humaid’s Men’s Majles Hall, a traditional gathering space in Sharjah, into a “New Classic” sanctuary that honors Emirati heritage while embracing modern functionality. Despite challenges such as a tight budget, limited square footage, and the need to preserve cultural authenticity, the redesign achieves a harmonious balance of timeless elegance and cutting-edge technology. The result is a versatile, IoT-enabled Majles hall that caters to contemporary demands without compromising its historical essence.

Concept: New Classic

The “New Classic” approach reinterprets traditional Arabian design through a minimalist lens. Key elements include preserved architectural details (arched doorways, geometric patterns) paired with sleek modern finishes, neutral tones, and smart technology. The design respects the Majles hall’s role as a social hub while enhancing comfort and convenience for today’s users.

´
Challenges & Solutions
  • Transforming Old to New: Retained iconic features like carved wooden screens (mashrabiya) and vaulted ceilings, refreshed with crisp white finishes. Integrated modern materials (e.g., marble accents, LED lighting) to contrast with traditional textures.
  • Tight Budget: Repurposed existing wooden furniture with reupholstered fabrics in beige linen. Used cost-effective marble-look tiles for flooring and focal walls.
  • Small Area, High Demand: Optimized space with modular seating (stackable cushions, collapsible tables) and built-in wall storage for seamless transitions between events. Mirrored panels and light-colored drapes to amplify the sense of space.

Design Elements

  • Color Palette: White dominates walls and ceilings, creating an airy backdrop, while beige upholstery and rugs add warmth. Subtle brown wood tones in furniture and trim provide depth.
  • Materials:
    • Marble: Featured in entryway flooring and tabletops as a nod to luxury.
    • Wooden Items: Restored teak seating platforms and custom shelving with traditional motifs.
    • Fabric: Durable, stain-resistant beige fabrics for cushions and curtains, balancing practicality with elegance.
  • Lighting: Layered smart LED systems—recessed ambient lighting, adjustable pendant lamps over seating areas, and hidden cove lighting to accentuate architectural details.

Smart Technology Integration
The Majles hall seamlessly incorporates IoT for enhanced usability:

  • Smart Lighting: Voice/app-controlled scenes (e.g., “Gathering,” “Presentation”) adjust brightness and warmth.
  • Climate Control: Zoned smart AC maintains optimal comfort, reducing energy waste.
  • Security: Discreet Wi-Fi cameras and motion sensors provide remote monitoring via smartphone.
  • Unified Control: Centralized app management (e.g., Google Home) for lighting, AC, and audiovisual systems.

Conclusion
This renovated Majles hall bridges Sharjah’s rich cultural legacy with the demands of modern living. By thoughtfully blending traditional craftsmanship with smart technology and space-saving solutions, the project delivers a multifunctional venue that respects its roots while adapting to future needs. It stands as a model for revitalizing heritage spaces in a budget-conscious, innovative manner.
